Horse Powered Reading®

During Horse Powered Reading® sessions, issues affecting learning are made visible by identifying obstacles (through the use of toys and props) that get in the way of understanding. Students see and experience reading with their entire mind, body, and emotions by creating metaphors for the skills involved in reading.

Often social-emotional issues, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues get in the way of student learning. Horse Powered Reading®, founded by Dr. Michele Pickel, can break through those barriers giving students a chance to learn or reinforce reading and other academic skills.

Cedar Lane Farm offers individual sessions for K-8 students focusing on critical reading skills they may be struggling with. Specifically,

• Text - words on a page and screen

• Decoding - sounding out words / know sight words

• Fluency - reading accurately- quickly and with expression

• Vocabulary - understanding word meanings

• Comprehension - making meaning from text; the goal of reading
